1. What inspired you to specialize in ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) medicine, and what is your speciality?
I was inspired to specialize in ENT because of the diversity of sub-specializations within the field. From microsurgery to complex head and neck surgery, facial plastic surgery, and even skull base surgery, ENT offers incredible challenges and opportunities to improve patients’ lives. My speciality includes facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, which focuses on cosmetic and functional rhinoplasty, advanced sinus surgery, and nasal allergy management.
2. What do you find most rewarding about being an ENT specialist?
The most rewarding aspect of my work is the ability to address functional and aesthetic concerns simultaneously. Whether helping a patient breathe better after sinus surgery or boosting their self-confidence through facial plastic surgery, seeing the improvement in their quality of life is incredibly fulfilling. The fact that I can enhance someone’s appearance while also improving their day-to-day function, such as breathing, speaking, or sleeping, drives me daily.
3. What are some of the most common ENT conditions you treat?
I frequently treat a wide array of ENT conditions, including chronic sinusitis, nasal obstructions, and deviated septums. My practice also focuses heavily on facial plastic surgery, such as rhinoplasty, facelifts, brow lifts, and reconstructive surgeries. Additionally, I treat skin cancers, facial fractures, and cosmetic concerns like droopy eyelids and sagging skin.
4. Can you share a memorable experience from your medical career?
One of the most memorable experiences in my career was treating a patient with severe facial fractures, which required a complex combination of rhinoplasty, brow lift, and facelift. The facelift, in particular, brought the patient’s outward appearance in line with how they felt inside, creating a sense of harmony between their inner vitality and external look. This transformation had a profound impact, significantly boosting their self-confidence and enhancing their personal and professional lives. Additionally, I’ve had the privilege of treating skin cancer patients and restoring their facial appearance after tumour removal, which has been profoundly fulfilling both professionally and personally.
5. What advice would you give to someone dealing with recurring sinus infections or allergies, and advice for those considering rhinoplasty?
For patients with recurring sinus infections or allergies, I always recommend a thorough history taking, a comprehensive ENT assessment—especially a nasal examination using an endoscope—and allergy testing. By conducting a root cause analysis, we can more effectively direct the management plan. For those considering rhinoplasty, I emphasize realistic expectations and the importance of selecting a surgeon who understands both the aesthetic and functional aspects of nasal surgery to ensure optimal results.
6. How do you stay current with the latest ENT care advancements?
Staying current is a priority for me. I organize and participate in various courses and conferences locally and internationally. I’m often invited as a speaker and faculty member for international surgical workshops and dissection courses. Additionally, I contribute regularly to scientific journals and have written several book chapters. I served as the editor for the Rhinology and Facial Plastic Surgery section of an ENT textbook. I was the guest editor for a special issue on Asian facial plastic surgery.
7. What is your approach to patient care and treatment?
My approach is deeply personalized. I believe in empowering my patients by helping them understand their conditions thoroughly. I provide educational resources, including reading materials, blog posts, and detailed information on my website, ensuring they can access all the knowledge they need. I take the time to listen carefully and make sure my patients fully grasp their treatment options. Throughout the informed consent process, I remain available to answer any questions, even after our initial consultation. My goal is to guide patients by presenting the treatment options best suited to their specific condition and then supporting them in choosing what they feel is the best path forward, tailored to their individual circumstances.
8. Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of medicine?
Outside of medicine, I enjoy playing the guitar and find solace in music. I’m also passionate about adventure and philanthropy. I’ve participated in treks to raise awareness and funds for charity, including summiting Mount Kilimanjaro and completing the Everest Base Camp trek. Additionally, I contribute to Akshaya Patra, a charity dedicated to providing nutritious meals to school children in India.
9. What’s one thing you wish more patients knew about ENT health?
Facial deformities can lead to low self-esteem, social withdrawal, and limited financial mobility. Facial plastic surgery can help restore not only appearance but also confidence. I wish more patients understood how ENT issues, like sinus infections or adenoid and tonsil problems, can significantly impact their overall quality of life. These conditions can affect children’s hearing, learning, sleep, attention, and even growth. Patients should also never ignore neck lumps, changing moles, or other facial lesions, as they could be signs of cancer.
10. How do you help patients feel comfortable during appointments or treatments?
I ensure that my patients feel comfortable by giving them as much time as they need during consultations. I prioritize patient education, providing written instructions, illustrations, videos, and verbal explanations to help them understand their options. For those considering surgery, I always meet with them again after the initial consultation to answer any further questions they may have.
11. Any fun facts about ENT?
Whether it’s helping you hear your favourite music, smell fresh flowers, taste delicious food, or feel the joy of a refreshing breeze on your face, I aim to ensure you can fully enjoy all of life’s sensory pleasures. You could say I’m in the business of “making sense” of everything! After all, what’s the point of having senses if you’re not living your life to the fullest?
I approach surgeries like rhinoplasty and facelifts not just from a medical standpoint but with the precision and creativity of an artist. And, of course, when I work on facial plastic surgery, it’s a perfect mix of “sense and sensibility”—ensuring you look your best and feel great doing it.
